The notification cited a rule under the RTE Act that requires primary school teachers to work 45 hours per week. The cancellation of the notification was decided at a Gujarat cabinet meeting.
Ahmedabad: Following public outcry, the Gujarat government on Wednesday revoked a previous announcement requiring primary school teachers to work for eight hours every day, as required under the Right to Education (RTE) Act 2009.
Primary school teachers will be required to work for eight hours from Monday to Friday and five hours on Saturdays, according to a notification issued by the Director of Primary Education earlier this month. The notice highlighted a regulation under the RTE Act that requires primary school teachers to work 45 hours each week.
The cancellation of the notification was decided at a Gujarat cabinet meeting. “The state government agreed to revoke the notification issued by the Director of Primary Education during a cabinet meeting.
Teachers can work for as long as it takes them to complete their tasks properly “After the meeting, state Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasamat informed reporters in Gandhinagar. Teachers at government elementary schools would have worked two hours longer than normal if the directive had been followed.
Several teachers’ unions have expressed opposition to the increased working hours and requested the government to reconsider its decision. The opposition Congress has also called for the directive to be rescinded. “We had submitted a request to the state administration to have this notification revoked.”
This was a matter of two lakh elementary school teachers’ self-respect. Ghanshyam Patel, state president of the Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh, stated, “I am pleased the government has chosen to retract this notice.”
