Tokyo Paralympics 2020: Krishna Nagar of India won the gold medal in the Games on Sunday, defeating Kai Man Chu of Hong Kong 21-17, 16-21, and 21-17. This is India’s fifth gold medal at a major international competition.
Indian shuttler Krishna Nagar overcame Hong Kong’s Kai Man Chu to earn India’s sixth gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 on Sunday. The game between Nagar and Chu took 43 minutes to complete.
The 22-year-old from Jaipur, Rajasthan, won the opening round 21-17. Chu, on the other hand, came back strong in the second round, winning 16-21. Nagar won the gold medal in the third and final round, defeating Chu 21-17 to maintain his perfect record at the Games.
Nagar has now joined fellow shuttler, Pramod Bhagat, on the list of gold medal winners after defeating Chu in the final. Bhagat, a 33-year-old Bhubaneswar native, won the SL3 gold medal on Saturday, defeating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell in two straight sets (21-14 and 21-17).
Meanwhile, Suhas L Yathiraj, a district magistrate (DM) from Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida) and a fellow shuttler, earned a historic Silver medal after losing to Lucas Mazur of France in the men’s singles SL4 class final on Sunday. In a 62-minute summit fight, the 38-year-old Noida district magistrate, who has an injury to one of his ankles, put on a show before barely losing 21-15 17-21 15-21 to two-time world champion Mazur.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi complimented Nagar on his achievement in the Tokyo Olympics, saying he is pleased to see India’s badminton players excelling at the international competition. “Every Indian has smiled as a result of Krishna Nagar’s amazing achievement. He is to be congratulated on earning the Gold Medal. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors “PM Modi sent out a tweet.
President Ram Nath Kovind praised Nagar’s achievement, saying the para-athlete had proven his grit by winning the gold medal at the Games. “Your determination and strength are admirable,” President Kovind tweeted. You will inspire a lot of Indians. Best wishes and congratulations “.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot praised Nagar’s accomplishment and congratulated him on his “starry triumph” at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. “Great news from the Tokyo Paralympics that para-badminton player Krishna Nagar of Jaipur, Rajasthan has won a Gold medal in the men’s para Badminton SH6 category,” he tweeted.
