Teachers’ Day is observed on the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the country’s first vice president and second president. Dr. Radhakrishnan was a well-known educator. His students once asked him whether he would allow them to celebrate his birthday out of respect. Dr. Radhakrishnan rejected any special treatment, but advised the students to mark the day as Teachers’ Day in honour of their contributions to society. That was the start of it all.

This is a day to recognise and thank all educators and instructors. Schools and higher educational institutions across India have been paying respect to Dr Radhakrishnan on this day. Many students express their thanks and appreciation for their instructors by sending cards and presents to them.
